Our lab-grade calcium hydroxide, also known as hydrated lime, is a white crystalline substance. It is mildly water-soluble, acid-soluble, and alcohol-insoluble.

Having a solubility of only 0.2g/100ml in water, solutions are moderately basic. Limewater is a transparent, saturating solution of calcium hydroxide in water. It readily combines with carbon dioxide (CO2) to produce calcium carbonate.

CO2 can be detected in a gas mixture by stirring it with limewater in a transparent container. A cloudy calcium carbonate precipitate forms if CO2 is present.

Calcium hydroxide has multiple applications in metallurgy, paper and fibre production, chemical synthesis, and water purification.
