Five 10-gram screw-top chemical bottles with 12 lengths of magnesium ribbon are included in our flame test kit. This package contains chemicals that, when burned, give off distinctive flame colours that can be used to distinguish between six different metals.

In order to do the test, place a powdered sample of the chemical (see the list below) on the nichrome wire loop and position it in the flame’s hotter region. Cut a small piece off the magnesium and set it on the nichrome loop that has been soaked with alcohol to burn it. Hold until it catches fire.

Be sure to thoroughly clean the wire loop between samples by soaking it in alcohol to remove any dust or contaminants. The test sample flame’s genuine colour is interfered with.

Put on a lab apron and splash goggles for safety. Young people should work under supervision.

Compare the flame colour that was observed with the colour values listed below to interpret the test findings.
