99% magnesium, 1% zinc, and 1% lead are present.

Magnesium burns with a very visible reaction that releases a significant amount of heat energy and can easily reach temperatures of a few thousand degrees, generating magnesium oxide (magnesia). Do not stare straight at the flame for more than a few seconds because it is incredibly intense. Wear ultraviolet-blocking UV goggles for safety.

You can light magnesium ribbon with a standard butane lighter or Bunsen burner. Once lit, the ribbon will burn along the length of the strand gradually but steadily, leaving a flaky, white, magnesium oxide residue in its wake. Magnesium ribbon is challenging to put out once it has started to ignite.
