The Hydrion pH test pencil, which can be used practically anywhere, measures the pH of any surface. Spot checks on solid or porous materials and surfaces to be painted, such as drywall or concrete block, are convenient. It is also useful for determining the pH of a cosmetic product on the skin.

To begin, dampen the surface or area with distilled water. Stroke the surface with the pH pencil many times. Compare the resulting colour to the colour chart after 30 seconds. Because the contents of tap water can alter the outcome, use distilled water.
