What exactly is an acid-base indicator?
A weak acid or a weak base is an acid-base indicator. Indicators have a highly important quality in that their colour changes depending on the pH of the solution in which they are placed. This colour shift does not occur at a set pH, but rather gradually throughout a range of pH values. The colour change interval refers to this range. A useful pH range is assigned to each pH indicator. Phenolphthalein, for example, changes colour from colourless at 8.2 to pink at 10. Furthermore, Bromthymol Blue has a good pH range of 6.0 (yellow) to 7.6 (blue).
How do liquid indicators work?
Other solutions are tested using liquid pH indicators. A few drops of the appropriate indicator applied to an unknown solution can reveal its pH value. Titration is a typical laboratory method in which chemists utilize pH indicators. An unknown ingredient is measured here by carefully adding a known concentration solution until a neutral point is attained. The colour shift of a pH indicator added into the unknown solution indicates the neutral point. In schools, the phenolphthalein pH indicator is utilized in a student activity that shows how a “infectious agent” spreads through a community.
