When exposed to light in the presence of organic material, silver nitrate crystals are colourless, translucent flakes that turn grey or grayish-black. In addition, silver nitrate dissolves in water, glycerine, and hot alcohol. Silver thiosulfate solution (STS) is created by combining silver thiosulfate with sodium thiosulfate. STS is frequently used to keep flowers from falling off potted plants during transportation from a nursery to a retail store. It is also used to stimulate the growth of male flowers on female plants.
In addition to photographic film, silver plating, gold raku ceramic glazes, and as a laboratory reagent, silver nitrate is widely utilized.
